How to upgrade to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
With the launch of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, players have the option to upgrade from the standard Nintendo Switch Online membership. However, the upgrade path isn’t the most obvious thing, especially since there are a lot of situations that change what you need to do. While many players might dive into the new expansion pack membership, others may want to switch from an existing base membership. Or maybe you are considering subscribing to a Switch Online + Expansion Pack family plan.
Whatever situation you find yourself in, we’ve got all the details to upgrade to the new Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership – for individual or family plans. Here’s everything you need to know about the upgrade.
It is possible to switch from the standard individual subscription to Nintendo Switch Online to an individual plan + expansion pack. The Expansion Pack + normally costs $ 50, but Nintendo will allow you to pay the difference, using a pricing model of $ 0.05 per day. In other words, if you have 20 days of your basic membership left, Nintendo will reduce the price of the upgrade by $ 1. If you have six months left, you will only have to pay around $ 41 to upgrade. All of these calculations are automated, so you don’t have to worry about doing the calculations yourself.
To upgrade, go to the eShop and select the account you want to use. Once you’ve done that, navigate to Nintendo Switch online from the options on the left. To take Membership options and you will have the option to upgrade based on the prorated amount described above. To select Proceed to purchase, then confirm the auto-renewal options. You can also use your Gold Points towards your purchase which is great.
Click on To agree then To confirm, and you’ll have access to the Nintendo Switch Online + expansion pack for 365 days.
How to Switch from a Basic Nintendo Switch Online Membership to a Family Membership + Expansion Pack
As in the previous step, you can switch from a basic individual Nintendo Switch Online membership to a family membership + expansion pack by following the same steps. The family + extension pack costs $ 80 but is much cheaper individually if all members share it. Once you reach the Membership options section on the eShop, be sure to select Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family membership. From there, follow the same steps as above to complete the purchase.
The family plan administrator can add up to seven other members (eight in total) to the plan by visiting the Nintendo website. From there choose Nintendo Account in the upper left corner, then select Family group. You can then add members to the group. After they are added, each member will receive an email to confirm their family membership, and in doing so, they will all have access to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The more members added to the plan, the more you save (assuming everyone shares the cost equally). $ 80 divided by eight members is only $ 10 each, which is much better than the $ 50 option for individual plans.
It looks like only the admin has the option to pay the difference if they already have a basic subscription – any basic subscription that additional members may have is not counted.
How to Switch from a Basic Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership to an Individual Membership + Expansion Pack
There’s no way to switch from a Basic Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership to an Individual Membership + Expansion Pack – at least, not with the option of paying the difference. You can leave the family group if you are not the administrator and then purchase the individual subscription + expansion pack for yourself. If you are the administrator, you will need to wait for it to expire before you can purchase an individual subscription of any kind. Alternatively, an administrator can upgrade from the standard family plan to the + Expansion Pack plan by paying the difference of $ 0.09 per day.
